Watch Microsoft's three-hour Build keynote in just nine minutes

Microsoft had a lot on the docket for its Build developer conference today, so much that it ran just a hair under three hours. A lot of that was code demos, some third-party code demos, and even more demos that happened to involve code. But there were also some pretty exciting moments too. Things like augmented reality robots, new browsers that are not named Internet Explorer, and Microsoft giving us a look at how developers can bring over their software from Android and iOS. We've...-> read more

How a baseball game played for no one symbolizes what's wrong with America

The Baltimore Orioles played against the Chicago White Sox in an empty stadium today. The Orioles won, but no one was there to cheer. The head of Major League Baseball Robert D. Manfred decided this week that it would be safer for fans that the game proceed without spectators in the stands, and the game made history for being the first ever closed to the public. How did we get here? What does a baseball game say about the status quo in America? On April 12th, 25-year-old Freddie Gray was...-> read more

AT&T fined $6.9 million for overcharging the FCC's low-income support program

AT&T has agreed to pay $6.9 million to the Federal Communications Commission for over-billing its low-income support program, known as Lifeline. Lifelife allows households with low incomes to receive discounts on phone service, but customers have to verify with their phone company that they qualify for the program each year. An audit of AT&T discovered that in 2012 and 2013, it had failed to remove customers from the list who were no longer eligible for Lifeline. In the majority...-> read more

Airbnb's app finally works with the iPad and Android tablets

It's been almost a year since home-sharing service Airbnb announced a comprehensive and far-reaching redesign across the entire company — that included a new website, new mobile apps, and a new logo. Both the site and apps put a major focus on the often-beautiful photography Airbnb uses to advertise the homes of users that are available, something that seemed like a logical translation to tablets, but Airbnb's app remained phone-only. That change today with the release of Airbnb for the...-> read more

It's your last chance to get a free month of HBO Now

If you've got an Apple TV, iPhone, or iPad, you're running out of time to get a free month of HBO Now. Since launching earlier this month, the standalone subscription service has offered new customers (and that's everyone) a free 30-day trial. But that limited time deal is set to expire tomorrow, according to HBO Now's website. And Apple says you need to sign up for the free month "before" April 30th. So really, doing it today is probably your safest bet to lock down a month's worth of...-> read more

Bitcoin is starting to march toward the mainstream

Bitcoin is growing up.  I was briefly at the Inside Bitcoins conference in New York on Tuesday. The broad takeaway was that the cryptocurrency community is moving away from its origins in political ideology, specifically cryptoanarchy, and starting to think about how to promote Bitcoin into the mainstream.  Bitcoin as a currency has been falling out of favor. But Bitcoin as a mechanism by which to transfer money is in. The buzzwords are "regulation," "settlements," and "Wall Street."...-> read more

SF residents are trying to make a quick buck off selling their 415 numbers

Among the mass of IKEA furniture up for sale on San Francisco's Craigslist, a new item has popped up in the last few days: area code 415 phone numbers.  In February, the "628" joined the "415" as San Francisco's area code, inducing a wave of nostalgia for the city's singular identifier and a headache for residents who suddenly had to update their phone contacts to include the area code. The 415 had been the city's area code since 1947, although its original territory has been sliced...-> read more

Here's why Apple can't make enough Apple Watches (AAPL)

Apple may have found a key component inside the Apple Watch to be defective, The Wall Street Journal is reporting.  The watch's taptic engine, or the component that simulates the feeling of being tapped on the wrist, seems to be the issue. Apple is in the process of shifting all production of these taptic engines to another supplier, which is why it's having trouble keeping up with demand.  As a result, Apple will have to limit the watch's availability, the report says.
